Inspired by a project my father in law had before he passed. Below are some of my recent books and what I thought about them.

Poland — James Michener — 3/5
Started great. Dragged on through the middle. Ended great.

Boom: Bubbles and the End of Stagnation — Hobart & Huber — 4/5
Nice read about how ‘bubbles’ are beneficial to progress. The Manhattan Project, Apollo Program, and Bitcoin are all recent examples. Still not buying Bitcoin though. Helps explain the hype around AI right now.

Alone in Berlin — Hans Fallada — 5/5
Fantastic. Historical (semi) non-fiction.

The Battle of Berlin — Anthony Beevor — 4/5
Rich in depth. Was a treat reading prior to visiting Berlin. You can really see the history if you pay attention!

River of Doubt — Candice Millard — 5/5
Perhaps my favorite book. At the tail end of Teddy Roosevelt’s acclaim he explored (or survived) an unknown river in the Amazon. One of the best historical non-fiction books out there.

Astoria — Peter Stark — 5/5
Another historical non-fiction. Read this while exploring the Oregon coast with my wife and we ended our trip in Astoria. Was perfect.

The Wager — David Grann — 4/5
Easy read. Excellent non-fiction book about the fight to survive.
